At Hammacher Schlemmer, we take particular joy in celebrating Mother’s Day and recommending gifts for her. But we have a proud tradition of honoring women throughout the year and across the decades.
In 1934, we hired Miss Palmer as our first female salesperson — a rare employment choice at the time. Miss Palmer quickly quieted her critics when she waited on Lord Rothschild, who stopped in for a $1 thermometer but left with more than $500 in merchandise.
Our progressive attitude continued in 1945, when Else Schlemmer succeeded her late husband, William F. Schlemmer, as company president. When Else passed away 10 years later, she bequeathed $473,000 to her “children” — Hammacher Schlemmer’s cherished employees.
